By keeping us focused on ourselves and our individual happiness, DWYL distracts us from the working conditions of others while validating our own choices and relieving us from obligations to all who labor, whether or not they love it. It is the secret handshake of the privileged and a worldview that disguises its elitism as noble self-betterment. According to this way of thinking, labor is not something one does for compensation, but an act of self-love. If profit doesn’t happen to follow, it is because the worker’s passion and determination were insufficient. Its real achievement is making workers believe their labor serves the self and not the marketplace

I see them now, those burgers, as unflinchingly, unapologetically, magnificently queer.

On those nights, Lou would cook us crazy shit our mom never fixed, food so rich no adult should ever serve it to a ten-year-old. There were casseroles that used Monterey Jack as a suspension medium for olives, ground veal, and button mushrooms from a can. And there were Lou’s famous burgers, so rich and salty, so crusted with a mixture of caramelized onions, Roquefort crumbles, and Grey Poupon—a thick impasto gilded beneath the electric broiler element—I could only ever eat half before feeling sick. I loved every bite.

Looking back, I recognize in Lou’s burgers my first taste of food that didn’t give a fuck about nutrition or the drab strictures of home economics. They were calibrated for adult pleasure, acutely expressive of a formalized richness— exactly the type of thing James Beard taught Americans to eat (for all I know, Lou’s recipe was straight out of Beard).

Moral Squeamishness

Days after the euthanasia of a healthy young giraffe at Copenhagen zoo sparked controversy around the world, a second Danish zoo has announced that it is considering a similar fate for another giraffe – also named Marius.

Jyllands Park zoo, in western Denmark, currently has two male giraffes, but has been approved to participate in the European breeding programme. If zookeepers manage to acquire a female giraffe, seven-year-old Marius will have to make way.

– People are total idiots. Zoos themselves are founded on a culture of death and of the commidification of life. They make decisions of what to ‘save’ – why should it surprise if they make decisions on what to cull? What’s more, the first giraffe was mainly used for meat. The point here is again one of which arguments, which positions, hold water. Vegans, really, have voices that can be raised here – but then vegans, appropriately, must be opposed to zoos ab initio. One cannot think that they would be more upset by another example of that which is in itself wrong. Thus either you have no right to concern, or in the case that you do, your position is simply an extension of itself.

Put another way – zoos are not good places that sometimes do bad things. Zoos are bad places, that always do bad things. Surprise is an ineffective register of the complicit.

Althusser: no class can hold State power over a long period without at the same time exercising its hegemony over and in the State Ideological Apparatuses

Althusser does not reject the Marxist model; however, he does want to explore the ways in which ideology is more pervasive and more “material” than previously acknowledged. (See the previous module for Althusser on ideology.) As a result, he proposes to distinguish “ideological state apparatuses” (ISAs for short) from the repressive state apparatus (SA for short). The state apparatus includes “the Government, the Administration, the Army, the Police, the Courts, the Prisons, etc.” (Althusser, Lenin 96). These are the agencies that function “by violence,” by at some point imposing punishment or privation in order to enforce power.

“what the bourgeoisie has installed as its number-one, i.e. as its dominant ideological State apparatus, is the educational apparatus, which has in fact replaced in its functions the previously dominant ideological State apparatus, the Church”. Through education, each mass of individuals that leaves the educational system at various junctures (the laborers who leave the system early, the petty bourgeoisie who leave after their B.A.s, and the leaders who complete further specialist training) enters the work force with the ideology necessary for the reproduction of the current system: “Each mass ejected en route is practically provided with the ideology which suits the role it has to fulfill in class society”. Other ISAs contribute to the replication of the dominant ideology but “no other ideological State apparatus has the obligatory (and not least, free) audience of the totality of the children in the capitalist social formation, eight hours a day for five or six days out of seven”. The very importance of this function is why schools are invested in hiding their true purpose through an obfuscating ideology: “an ideology which represents the School as a neutral environment purged of ideology (because it is…lay), where teachers respectful of the ‘conscience’ and ‘freedom’ of the children who are entrusted to them (in complete confidence) by their ‘parents’ (who are free, too, i.e. the owners of their children) open up for them the path to the freedom, morality and responsibility of adults by their own example, by knowledge, literature and their ‘liberating’ virtues”. So pervasive is this ideology, according to Althusser, that “those teachers who, in dreadful conditions, attempt to turn the few weapons they can find in the history and learning they ‘teach’ against the ideology, the system and the practices in which they are trapped… are a kind of hero”

what a crowd of cunts

Move over Superman, it’s time for Superpope. In the same week that he became the first pontiff to be featured on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine, Pope Francis has appeared in cartoon form on a building near the Vatican, his right fist clenched ahead of him in classic Superman style.

He is carrying a black briefcase bearing the word valores, Spanish for values, containing a scarf bearing the blue and red colours of his favourite Argentinian football team, San Lorenzo. The artwork, which has been pasted to the wall, is signed Maupal 2014.

Women Disproportionately Affected by Minimum Wage for Restaurant Workers

There are people who care deeply about whether or not everything on their plates has been grown within a hundred miles. But do they care about the person who’s serving? —Gloria Steinem

-> servers are two times more likely to use food stamps, which is particularly insulting since they work around food all day. Two-thirds of tipped workers are women, contributing to a very gendered view of poverty, and tipped workers only earn enough to meet the federal minimum wage in 7 states. And that’s the bright side, assuming your customers don’t use racism or homophobia to avoid tipping you anything at all.

Crime in Venezuela / Perhaps the GoldenPope can solve it?

the media has a very narrow and neo-liberal idea of what crime is, where it is always a case of individual hurting individual, and often involves damage to or stealing of private property. Hence, graffiti and small scale robbery are considered crime, but war, sexist advertising, bad working conditions, verbal racism, turning someone away from hospital because they don’t have enough money, environmental damage by big business and so on, is not.

stats: 32x more likely for a man to die struck by lightening than falsely accused of rape

Simple and effective use of data:

Fuck the Pope

This Pope crap has to end – look at this appalling redwashing:

Guess which of the following statements were made by Marx and which by Pope Francis

1. In a similar way, by raising dreams of an inexhaustible market and by fostering false speculations, the present treaty may prepare a new crisis at the very momentwhen the market of the world is but slowly recovering from the recent universal shock.

2. … society needs to be cured of a sickness which is weakening and frustrating it, and which can only lead to new crises.

etc etc

on the importance (again) of getting things right up-front

What I learned was, you have to be inviting women of color if you’re having a meeting, or going to meetings or events that women of color are having, and being supportive of people who are different from your own projects and plans in what they’re doing. If you don’t do that early on, you can’t add it in later, and start having these conversations three years down the road when already you’re in the predominantly white situation. What happens is all these white women arguing about who is more or less racist, or who is more or less classist.
